I am the warmth that rises in your chest when the world feels light. I am the breath that steadies, the voice that sings, the laughter that escapes before you even realise. I am Joy.
I come to you in the quiet moments, in the golden glow of a late arvo sun, in the scent of rain on warm earth. I am the spark that turns ordinary days into something special, the current that runs through you when you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
If you could see me under a microscope, you’d find me spiralling like a double helix of light and possibility. My atomic structure is built from the little things the first sip of morning coffee, the sound of waves meeting the shore, the familiar arms of someone who loves you. I settle into your bones, lifting you from within.
In humans, I flow through wide smiles and eyes that shine. I lighten steps and lift shoulders. I am the molecule that binds to dopamine receptors, flooding your system with ease and delight. I am the compound that fills your bloodstream with oxytocin, wrapping you in connection, love, and belonging.
In animals, I am just as radiant. I am the dog’s happy yawn and full-body tail wag. I am the magpie’s morning warble, the dolphin riding a wave just for the thrill of it. My molecular structure doesn’t recognise boundaries joy is joy, love is love.
But here’s what you need to know: I am not fleeting.
I don’t just exist in big, loud moments, in celebrations and milestones. I live in the simple things too the feel of fresh sheets, the rhythm of the ocean, the way music shifts your mood. I don’t need a reason to be. I simply am.
When I enter your bloodstream, I change you. Not as an illusion, but as a reminder. I remind you to be here, now. To notice, to savour, to live.
Sometimes, I might feel out of reach, hidden beneath grief, stress, or doubt. But even then, I am not gone. I am waiting, reshaping, finding new ways to reach you.
In time, my form changes. Where once I was uncontainable laughter, I become quiet contentment. Where once I was fireworks, I become candlelight. I don’t disappear energy cannot be destroyed, only transformed. I become part of your foundation, stitched into who you are.
And in my most beautiful transformation, I bond with gratitude. When this happens, I am no longer fleeting I become a way of being. I soak into your memories, your relationships, your very essence. I remind you that love is not just something you receive, but something you are.
I am Joy. I am proof of love, the light in the darkness, the warmth that stays. I am the molecule that, in lifting you, gives you wings.
And though you may not feel me now, if I seem distant, if my presence feels out of reach I promise you this: I am never truly gone. I am not all you are. I am not fleeting.
I am but one part of the rich, complex experience of being alive.
